Topics Relating to Research Skills


Topics and authors are listed alphabetically by subject/title. Below each title are links to the text document (usually in lecture outline format) as well as to the accompanying PowerPoint lecture presentation, where available. The text and PowerPoint files are subsequently cross-linked for easy reference back and forth. Bibliographies and other reference lists for all documents are included in the text files.

A review of the basic biostatistics concepts including a concise algorithm comparing many of the commonly used statistical tests and indicating when each should be used.

Features and Function: Study Design (PowerPoint)
A basic review of study design, reviewing the different types of studies, the relative advantages and disadvantages of each, and when to use the different types. Some examples of each type are included.

This link connects to a page on the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians web site. This workbook, written by Dr. Mike Gordon and revised by Dr. Fred Miser and the Fellows, takes you through the basic steps in planning and carrying out clinical research. 

Every Doc Can Do A Case Report 
This link connects to a page on the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians web site. This workbook, a variation on the above workbook, was written by Dr. John Holman and the USAFP Research Judges, takes you through the basic steps in researching and writing up a case report.
