What Do They Do?


The graduates of the Faculty Development Fellowship go on to assume leadership positions in residency programs and medical facilities throughout the military. Each fellowship graduate is a unique leader, with specific skills designed to complement a wide array of practice scenarios in military GME, medical administration, and clinical medicine.

Here is a sample of MAMC Faculty Development fellowship graduates and their current positions:

LTC Gary Clark (MPH 2000)

LTC Clark is currently the Associate Program Director at Madigan AMC, Fort Lewis, WA. He is slated to become the Residency Director at Madigan in July 2001.

COL Jeff Clark (MPH,1997)
COL Clark is currently Chief, Family Practice Department at Womack AMC, Fort Bragg, NC. He will be moving on to become the DCCS of Wuerzburg Army Hospital this summer.

COL Dave Ellis (MPH,1994)
COL Ellis is currently Chief, Family Practice Department at Tripler AMC, Hawaii. He has also been Chief, Family Practice Department at Womack AMC, Fort Bragg, NC; Chief, PCCM at Fort Sill, and Residency Director at Tripler AMC.

CDR Rich Emerine (MPH,1996)
CDR Emerine recently succumbed to a malignant brain tumor. He was previously the Faculty Development Fellow and Research Coordinator at Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton. Rich will be greatly missed.

MAJ Brian Harrington (MPH 1999)
MAJ Harrington has transferred to Darnall Army Community Hospital, Fort Hood, TX where he serves as the Assistant Residency Director of the new FP residency program.

MAJ John Heflin (MPH 1999)
MAJ Heflin is presently serving on the residency staff at Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg NC.

CDR John Holman (MPH 1999)
CDR Holman is the Associate Program Director at the Family Practice Residency, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, CA.

CAPT (s) Dennis Hufford
(MBA 1999)
CDR Hufford was the first Madigan fellow to complete the new MBA academic track. CDR Hufford is presently serving the FP residency program at Naval Hospital Pensacola, FL, as the coordinator for research and faculty development. He will be moving on in July 2001 to Naval Hospital Portsmouth where he will be the Department Head of Family Practice.

CAPT Bob Kiser (MA,1993)
CAPT Kiser is currently the Commanding Officer Naval Hospital, Guam. He previously served as the Specialty Advisor for Family Practice to the Navy Surgeon General. He is also the President-Elect for the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Practice.

CAPT Evelyn Lewis (MA,1991)
CAPT Lewis is currently Assistant Department Chief of Family Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda MD. Other positions have included Director of the Family Medicine Clerkship, and Consultant to the Navy Surgeon General for Minority Affairs.

CAPT Darrell Lovins (MPH,1992)
CAPT Lovins is currently stationed at the Air Force Academy. He was previously billeted as Head, Family Practice Department at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune.

CAPT (s) Bob Marshall (MPH,1996)
CDR Marshall is currently Associate Program Director of the Puget Sound Family Medicine Residency, Naval Hospital Bremerton. He is also the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians Webmaster.

COL Tom Michels (MPH,1992)
COL Michels is currently Chief, Family Practice Department at Madigan AMC, Fort Lewis, WA.

COL John Kugler (MPH,1988)
COL Kugler is the current Consultant to the Army Surgeon General for Family Practice. He is also the DCCS at DACH, and has been a past Director of the Faculty Development Fellowship and Department Chief or Family Practice and Primary Care

LTC Eric Morgan (MPH,1998)
LTC Morgan is currently Residency Director, Family Practice, Eisenhower AMC, Fort Gordon, GA.

Fred Miser, MD (MA,1990)
Dr. Miser is currently Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Family Practice, The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He occupied positions including Director of the Faculty Development Fellowship (MAMC) and Residency Director (Tripler AMC) during his Army career.

COL Michael Pasquarella 
COL Pasquarella is currently the Chief of the Department of Medical Science in the Academy of Health Sciences at the Army Medical Department Center and School, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

COL John Powers (MA,1987)
COL Powers is currently working for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. He has previously held the position of Consultant to the Army Surgeon General for Family Practice

LTC Guy Runkle (MA,1994)
LTC Runkle is currently Residency Director at Madigan AMC. He has also been Research and Faculty Development Coordinator at Fort Benning.

LTC Keith Salzman (MPH 2000)
LTC Salzman is the Brigade Surgeon for the 3rd Brigade/2nd ID IBCT

COL Joe Yetter (MPH,1997)
COL Yetter is currently Director of the Faculty Development Fellowship at Madigan AMC, Fort Lewis WA.
