Methods

Journal club will meet approximately once a month. Both resident and staff will sign up for a specific session. The clinical question will be outlined in the PICO format.

1. Pre-Journal Club (1-3 weeks prior)

  • Residents assigned to Club J will submit 4-6 clinical questions in form of PICO (Problem, Intervention, Control, Outcome) format that are derived from questions the resident’s developed during clinics or other rotations.

  • Online voting for staff and resident voting

  • Search the medical literature

    • Either together, separate or let resident do it.

    • After searching the medical literature, and sharing search strategies, both staff and resident will decide on which one journal article to analyze closely
  • Both resident and staff will then critically analyze the appropriate literature using a pre-designed worksheet and methodology.

  • Resident and Staff should also discuss effective ways of leading the discussion.

  • Resident will copy and distribute the article into each staff and resident’s mailboxes

    • Distribution immediately before Wednesday CME session 1 week prior to Club J is optimal

2. Journal Club

  • Both resident and staff will then co-facilitate a discussion on the article chosen.

3. Post-Journal Club

  • Staff will evaluate resident performance, using the provided evaluation tool. Will also get together with resident briefly for an after-action-review over the completed session.
