Medscape A very fancy Web Journal, with excerpts from other journals, patient quizzes, news, and managed care articles. Offers free Medline, but expects you to become a registered user before getting to the good stuff. Registration is free. Produced by SCP Communications, Inc.

Big Organizations

American Academy of Family Physicians Includes links to the journals American Family Physician and Family Practice Management. Also includes links to most FP residencies, clinical practice guidelines, and patient handouts. You'll need your AAFP ID number to get to the really good stuff, including an electronic CME reporting form.

American Academy of Pediatrics Includes links to the journal Pediatrics.

American College of Physicians Includes links to Annals of Internal Medicine and ACP Journal Club.

American College of Rheumatology Includes links to Arthritis & Rheumatism and Arthritis Care & Research.

National Institutes of Health Information on NIH programs and services. Again, stays busy during business hours.

Centers for Disease Control Self-explanatory. Has great infectious disease info, as well links to other good stuff.

CDSC (Communicable Disease Surveillance Center) The British counterpart to America's CDC.

American Medical Informatics Association A professional association for folks who design computing resources for health care. These folks put on the annual Symposium on Computer Applications in Medical Care (SCAMC).

Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Legal Medicine AFIP is a tri-service agency of the DOD that publishes the Legal Medicine Open File. This online risk management and quality assurance journal offers free CME credit (up to 35 hours annually) to full-time military and federal health care providers.

AHCPR Clinical Guidelines Here is the opinion of the American HealthCare Policy Research Commission on how you should be practicing medicine (National Guidelines Clearinghouse)

Health Reviews for Primary Care Providers A nicely-organized list of review articles and medical references by Dr. Margaret Thompson of Allegheny University of the Health Sciences.

Cliniweb Another great service of Oregon Health Sciences University. I considered including it under "Links of Links", but because it has its own search engine, I put it here. Includes a nice "Intern On-Call Handbook."

Pharmaceutical Information Network A compilation of drug information that tries hard to balance the drug company, researcher, and provider views. Primarily aimed at the pharmacist, but a wealth of info for physicians and physician extenders.

Expert Systems in Medicine An interesting explanation and discussion of computerized decision aids in medicine, as well as links to several existing expert systems. Could be helpful for that puzzling case...

MerckMedicus A very nice reference site that also offers free CME credits

AAFP Clinical Algorithms A collection of clinical algorithms from the folks at the AAFP - beware: good, but not so easy to search in a hurry

National Medical Society Online Library A source of online reference materials - must be NMS member

Medical Matrix A Guide to Internet Clinical Medical Resources, maintained by the American Medical Informatics Association.
