INDIVIDUAL
PROTECTIVE MEASURES WHILE TRAVELING:
THREATS:
- Current intelligence indicates there is
no know specific aggressor
- General potential aggressors include unsophisticated
criminals, activists, extremists, and terrorists
- Public safety threats include fire, drowning,
wild life, and persons under the influence of drugs or alcohol
WHILE TRAVELING IN A POV:
- Do not put identifying stickers or license
plates on your car
- When vehicle is unattended ensure it is
locked and alarm is activated if one is installed
- If possible park in a secure well lit
area
- Do not let the valet park you car
- Back into parking places (Combat Park)
- When returning to vehicle approach with
caution.
- Have keys ready.
- Observe for people watching you.
- Do not have hands full with packages.
- Walk down the middle of the parking lot
aisle not in-between cars.
- Check around/under vehicle for aggressor
- Ensure vehicle is road worthy and has
a full tank of gas
- Vary routes taken and know your route
(have a map in the car)
- Keep doors locked and windows up
- Keep cell phone available with emergency
numbers programmed into speed dial
- Drive in the inner most lane to facilitate
U-turns
- Stop far enough back from car ahead of
you to allow you to pull out (Rule of Thumb: Be able to see other
cars tires meet the road) and keep car in gear if it is a manual
transmission
- Be aware of vehicles following you. When
stopped be aware of pedestrians approaching your car.
AT HOTELS:
- Carry civilian luggage not an Army issued
bag
- Do not give your room number to strangers
- Sleep away from windows and keep curtains
drawn
- Leave lights and TV on while room is vacant
- Arrange knock signals- no knock- no open
even if you have a peep hole
- Have a duress code word or signal
- Answer the phone using ìHelloî
not name and rank
- Vary the use of stairs and elevators-
get off on different floors and take the stairs
- Donít use the same route- vary
your entrances and exits, avoid patterns
- Keep your room key in you possession at
all times
- Be aware of your surrounding and others
WHILE ON FOOT:
- DO NOT WEAR CLOTHING THAT IDENTIFIES YOU
OR YOUR OCCUPATION
- Try to detect surveillance
- Vary routes and eating places
- Refuse the first taxi offered
- Use a civilian ID
- Know emergency phone numbers and carry
a cell phone or correct change
- Know safe havens and who the security
personnel are
- Travel with a friend
- Beware of overly friendly strangers
- Be cautious in public restrooms, always
use a stall and ensure it is close to the exit
- Do not over indulge in alcohol
- Stay near people but avoid tightly packed
