COMPREHENSIVE PACKING LIST

July 1999

This list is meant to be a comprehensive list of items from which to choose for a deployment. Certainly you won't have room to bring everything, but with planning with your team members, friends, and family, some items can be shared, sent, or bought once deployed.

• See standard unit packing list
• Find out th limit on number of bags; and limit in total weight
• Find out unit mission
• Determine sleeping/barracks arrangements
• Determine what can be sent later
• Try carrying it all yourself for long distances
• Assess PX/BX support at deployed site
• Will all troops have the same comfort items?
  • Will you be setting an example of ingenuity,
    • or enjoying comforts that no one else will have?
  • Can you share use with others?
    • Can your team members each bring something for team use?

• Tag/label/stencil all items, or sew name tag on EVERYTHING
• Prepare for all types of weather
• No aerosols, flammables, explosives
• Have what you absolutely need to survive, sleep, etc. on your LBE/butt pack, carry-on bag, (and possibly rucksack) because you may not see your duffel bag for days (or ever)
  • (some of the items listed below under Carry-on bag, and LBE are listed with this thought in mind).
• Keep as much packed as possible at all times- you never know when you have to move.
• Water and dust WILL get in everything- DOUBLE-BAG everything with waterproof bags.
• What if you have to move out quickly? Don't try to deny the hard reality of military life- this happens! I recommend: packing your gear DAILY after you arise. Leave out the items that have to dry, and leave space in the outer pouches of your ruck to stow them quickly. The day when an order comes to move out, or go home, or when a brutal storm hits your tent, is the day when you'll see the wisdom of this advice.
